Eindhoven, Philips Stadium
PSV: Zoet – Arias (74 Brenet), Bruma, Isimat-Mirin, Willems – Wijnaldum, Hiljemark (86 Maher), Guardado, Narsingh (74 Locadia), de Jong, Depay
Zenit: Lodygin – Smolnikov (79 Ryazantsev), Neto, Garay, Criscito – Javi Garcia, Shatov, Witsel (86 Tymoshchuk) – Hulk (90+2 Arshavin), Rondon (76 Ryazantsev), Danny (c)
Danny - Rondon - Hulk
Witsel - Shatov
Criscito - Garay - Neto - Smolnikov
Both sides had a couple of half-chances in the first half but failed to convert them. In the second half, Witsel dispossessed a defender in PSV half and released Danny down the left with a pass, he entered the area then cut the ball back to Hulk who had no problem
finding the empty net.
I generally didn’t like the game because of this individualistic approach typical of the AVB’s Zenit. Hulk and Danny were constantly trying to dribble through the midfiled and were responsible for giving away the ball in 90% of cases. While Zenit should easily finish off this mediocre PSV side at home in the second leg, the Petersburgers will surely have problems when they face a stronger opposition further down the road. I believe current Zenit has no chances of winning this competetion due to the fundamental problem with the (lack of) proper team play.
