Dynamo Moscow 0 – 1 Zenit

Russian League, Round 20
March 22, 2015
Dynamo 0 – 1 Zenit
Goal: Smolnikov 17
Khimki, Arena Khimki
Att: 12550

Dynamo Moscow: Gabulov – Buttner, Hubocan, Christopher Samba, Kozlov – Denisov, Dzsudzsak (60 Ionov), Vainqueur (69 Zobnin), Valbuena, Zhirkov, Aleksandr Kokorin
Zenit: Lodygin – Criscito, Neto, Garay, Smolnikov – Javi Garcia, Witsel, Danny (c) (89 Tymoshchuk) – Ryazantsev (85 Mogilevets), Hulk (75 Rondon), Shatov

Like in the reverse fixture in September, the big striker Rondon wasn’t in the starting lineup, presumably because Villas-Boas prefers to field a small forward against Dynamo’s two big central defs:

    Shatov - Hulk - Ryazantsev
       Witsel - Javi Garcia
Criscito - Garay - Neto - Smolnikov

This fixture traditionally produces lively and entertaining football and this game came as no exception. Zenit had less time to recover after a difficult game in Turin (just about 60 hours) but surprisingly the visitors looked really well and played excellent football. The only goal of the game was scored about 15 minutes into the first half when Danny’s brilliant long diagonal pass found Smolnikov at the far post and the attacking right back sent the ball home from close range. Zenit pretty much controlled the game afterwards. Dynamo rarely threatened and the visitors’ win wasn’t really in doubt. A very important result in the title race.
