Zenit’s first official game of the 2015-16 season. New signings Dzyuba and Yusupov both got a place in the starting lineup (neither of them convinced and both were substituted midway through the second half).
The hosts started somewhat slowly while Loko looked motivated and played very organized football. They were quicker and fought hard for each ball, to compensate for Zenit’s advantage in quality of individual players. Especially good was Miranchuk in midfield, who is creative and quick and very strong physically. He’s going to become a star player in the future for sure. Loko took the lead midway through the first half when Niasse caught Lodygin off guard beating him at his near post with a shot from some 15 meters.
Zenit improved in the second half, dominated the midfield and put significatnt pressure on the visitors’ goal looking for an equalizer which came only a few minutes from the end of normal time: Hulk sent a cross into the area from a free kick, Witsel headed the ball along and Smolnikov headed in at the far post. An uneventful 30 minutes of extra-time followed, then penalties of which Loko failed to score two and Zenit only one.
