Javi Garcia was suspended for this match. Villas-Boas picked a formation with three central defenders:

              Dzyuba
           Shatov - Hulk
Criscito - Witsel - Yusupov - Smolnikov
       Lombaerts - Garay - Neto
              Lodygin

Surprisingly, the hosts were a slightly better side in the first 20 minutes against the mighty opposition, then Zenit scored a classy opener: Shatov dribbled past several Ural players before releasing Dzyuba who took one touch to control the ball and with his second fired into the top far corner, fantastic goal.

Soon after the restart, Zenit’s man of the match Shatov earned a (dubious) penalty which Hulk converted. Midway through the second half the hosts pulled a goal back but just a few minutes later Zenit restored their 2-goal lead after catching Ural on a counter attack; Shatov again with the assist and Hulk with the goal. Danny came on as a sub just 2 minutes before the end of normal time but still managed to get on a scoresheet, sidefooting into the far corner from some 15 meters after Ryazantsev’s cutback.
